Costa home invaders the new threat to expat security

Spanish Home invaders know that they won't have to overcome alarm systems when the home is occupied or be worried about video cameras and silent alarms. Unlike robbing a retail store, home invaders expect privacy once inside your home and won’t have to deal with the police suddenly driving up or customers walking in. Once the offenders take control of a residence they can force the occupants to open safes, locate hidden valuables, supply keys to the family car, and PIN numbers to their ATM cards. Home invaders will try to increase their escape time by disabling the phones and sometimes will leave their victims bound or incapacitated. It is not unheard of for robbers to load up the victim’s car with valuables and drive away without anyone in the neighborhood taking notice. The most common point of attack is through the front door or garage. Sometimes the home invader will simply kick open the door and confront everyone inside. More common is when the home invaders knock on the door first or ring the bell. The home invader hopes that the occupant will simply open the door, without question, in response to their knock. Unfortunately, many people do just that.

Home invaders will sometimes use a ruse or impersonation to get you to open the door. They have been known to pretend to be delivering a package, flowers or lie about an accident like hitting your parked car. Once the door is opened for them, the home invaders will use an explosive amount of force and threats to gain control of the home and produce fear in the victims. Once the occupants are under control the robbers will begin to collect your valuables.
Some home robbers have been known to spend hours ransacking a residence while the homeowners are bound nearby watching in terror. Some robbers have been known to eat meals, watch TV, or even take a nap. A major fear is that the robbers might commit more violence like sexual assault or even murder. Some robbers have kidnapped and forced a victim to withdraw cash from their ATM machine or take them to their small business to rob it as well.

Lt. Michael Ferguson, who worked at Engine Nine in the Bond Hill neighborhood, was a key part of the illegal operation, authorities said.
"The firefighter played just as significant a role as the others," said Russ Neville, special agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration office in Cincinnati. "He wasn't the leader, but he was in there with all the rest."
Federal drug agents broke up a marijuana distribution ring this week, making 12 arrests in Greater Cincinnati on Thursday and Friday. Maurice Ferguson, 36, who owns the 513 Store in Walnut Hills, was the leader of the ring. The store sells Hip Hop clothing.
Maurice Ferguson, who sources said is related to Michael Ferguson, was arrested Thursday in Florence, Ky., in a retail strip where he was looking into opening a similar store, said Neville. He said Cincinnati and Florence police joined DEA officers in making arrests.
The group received shipments of 1,500 to 3,000 pounds of marijuana a month from a supplier in Riverside, Calif. The bales of marijuana came by tractor-trailer and were divided among several "stash houses," Neville said.

Sandra Avila "Queen of the Pacific"

Sandra Avila, known as the "Queen of the Pacific," one of its most notorious and glamorous drug smugglers, Mexican officials said on Tuesday.
Avila, 45, is accused of helping build up the Sinaloa cartel on Mexico's Pacific Coast in the 1990s using her friendships with the gang's leaders including Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, Mexico's most wanted man.
She was caught in September near her house in the Mexican capital, after a U.S. and Mexican authorities called for her arrest on drug trafficking and money laundering charges.Avila BeltrĆ”n is the niece of Miguel Angel FĆ©lix Gallardo, the onetime godfather of the Mexican drug trade who is serving a 40-year sentence for the murder of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent in 1984. Her great uncle Juan JosĆ© Quintero PayĆ”n was extradited to the States on drug trafficking charges in January. On her mother’s side, the BeltrĆ”ns got involved in heroin smuggling in the 1970s and later diversified into cocaine as the U.S. market for that drug exploded,Avila BeltrĆ”n’s love life was also a key factor in her allegedly meteoric ascent. In the late 1990s she became involved with Colombian trafficker Juan Diego Espinoza RamĆrez and through him met Diego Montoya, the head of Colombia’s Valle del Norte cartel who was arrested by the authorities in that country last month. Avila BeltrĆ”n became a kind of "transmission belt" between Montoya’s syndicate and Mexican cartels based in the state of Sinaloa, on the Pacific Coast, and Ciudad JuĆ”rez, along the U.S. border, says PatiƱo. Avila BeltrĆ”n moved money between the two countries and organized logistics for the safe delivery of cocaine shipments from Colombia. Her underworld godfather, according to PatiƱo, was the formidable Sinaloa-based trafficker Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada GarcĆa, who was indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington four years ago on charges of conspiring to import and distribute 2,796 kilos of cocaine with an estimated value of $47.4 million.

EGold's digital currency, "EGold," functioned as an alternative payment system and was purportedly backed by stored physical gold. Persons seeking to use the EGold payment system were only required to provide a valid email address to open an EGold account - no other contact information was verified. Once an individual opened an EGold account, he/she could fund the account using any number of exchangers, which converted national currency into EGold. Once open and funded, account holders could access their accounts through the Internet and conduct anonymous transactions with other parties anywhere in the world.
The indictment alleges that EGold has been a highly favored method of payment by operators of investment scams, credit card and identity fraud, and sellers of online child pornography. The indictment alleges that the defendants conducted funds transfers on behalf of their customers, knowing that the funds involved were the proceeds of unlawful activity; namely child exploitation, credit card fraud, and wire (investment) fraud; and thereby violated federal money laundering statutes. The indictment further alleges that the defendants operated the EGold operation without a license in the District of Columbia or any other state, or registering with the federal government, and thereby violated federal and state money transmitting laws. The indictment alleges that this conduct occurred at various times from 1999 through December 2005.
